ilk and milk products were primary drinks within the family of the South Indians across all classes. Butter milk one such drink was a popular welcome drink that was served not only to the house guests but also to all and sundry who passed by. Buttermilk is a traditional drink that was made by churning curd to remove the butter content. Various local tools existed to carry out this process. One of the finest and the simplest is this one exhibited here, that belongs to the priestly family of Chennapatna. This gadget is purely manual and very scientifically crafted by highly skilled carpenters. The high levels of precision ensure a very smooth operation. The Tamils called this “More Mathu” The gadget exists in various forms literally in all traditional households. Of course today electrical mixers have replaced this lovely tool.
